Mrs. Barron - MFL Subject Leader

My name is Mrs. Barron and I am Subject Leaderfor Foreign Modern Languages. 

In St. Bede’s Catholic Junior School, we teach Spanish as our Modern Foreign Language.

Learning other languages gives us insight into the people, culture and traditions of other countries. It allows children to deepen their understanding of the world. Teaching Spanish enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. We aim to provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries. My hope is that our children obtain a love of learning languages and gain enthusiasm for discovering other cultures.

Through Language teaching at St. Bede’s we aim to:

• Teach children how to learn another language in an enjoyable, fun and meaningful way.

• Raise awareness that languages other than English exist in our world.

• Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

• Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what the children want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

• Write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

• Stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and how it works.

• Develop positive attitudes to other languages and cultures.

• Develop confidence in children by ensuring success is part of the Languages ethos.

• Raise awareness of aspects of home culture by encountering other cultures and raising awareness of citizenship issues.

• Plan clearly so the Languages is taught in a logical progression and so the context meets the needs of all pupils.
