Who is St. Bede?

St. Bede lived in the eighth century and spent much of his life at the monastery of Jarrow. An English monk, historian and author, St. Bede had a passion and love for learning. He is the patron saint of scholars, teachers and historians.

St. Bede cared about sharing the truth of God’s Word and recording the history of our faith. People call him the 'Father of English History' because of his famous book, The Ecclesiastical History of the English People.

St. Bede helped to bring the Christian faith to Britain by translating the Latin and Greek writings of early scriptures. Since his writings teach the faith so well, St. Bede was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1899.

St. Bede also helped to make the 'Anno Domini' (AD) calendar system popular for counting years. Today, this system remains the global standard for calendar years.

St. Bede's writings and accounts continue to be studied and his words inspire us today. His life embodies a lifelong dedication to scholarship, teaching, and Christian faith.
